The Alliance Against Depression (AAD) is an approach based on evaluated trials and is recognised as the world’s best practice for the care of people with depression and in the prevention of suicidal acts. The initial implementation of the framework in the trial region of Nuremberg (The Nuremberg Alliance Against Depression) resulted in a 24% reduction of suicidal acts within a two-year period.
The AAD Coordination Centre at WA Primary Health Alliances supports local Alliances with resources, tools, and case studies. These support materials are informed by the European Alliance Against Depression (EAAD) Coordination Centre in Germany and from other alliances globally.
The Alliance Against Depression Framework

Anyone can start an Alliance
All local Alliances start with a small number or people wanting to improve the mental health and well-being of their community. Those ‘initiators’ then follow three stages to work with networks across the community to prepare, plan and implement their local Alliance.

“Under the Guise of Burnout” - Expert Statement
8 months ago
When discussing the revised version of the International Classification of Diseases, ICD-11, the World Health Organization has clearly defined burnout as a syndrome related to stress at work for the first time. However, one needs to be careful with the terminology, as the word “burnout” often conceals and trivializes a severe and life-threatening disorder – depression. Prof. Ulrich Hegerl, EAAD president, has published an expert statement on this matter:

WA Primary Health Alliance have launched an important campaign, Depression looks different for everybody, which aims to raise awareness of depression, encourage people to talk about their feelings and urge them to seek help. The campaign captures personal stories of depression as mini documentaries and in artworks to help people recognise the symptoms of this mental health condition that impacts about 1 million Australians each year.Four Western Australians are featured, and local artists were commissioned to produce paintings to demonstrate that depression looks different for everybody. The result is a powerful approach that aims to help people recognise depression if it comes up in their lives, or in someone they know, and direct them to insidemymind.org.au(External link) where they can find useful information on depression and how to get help.

Dr Daniel Rock and Dr Geoff Riley - Identifying and Treating Depression in Primary Care - The essential role of GPs in the Alliance Against Depression
Identifying and Treating Depression in Primary Care is a new training resource for GPs in Western Australia.
This 45-minute video lecture is a collaboration between WA Primary Health Alliance and Dr Geoff Riley, Professor of Rural and Remote Medicine and Honorary Senior Research Fellow, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, UWA Medical School. This video qualifies as self-directed learning in a GP's professional development plan.
Presenters Dr Daniel Rock and Dr Geoff Riley draw on their extensive knowledge and experience to deliver a contemporary perspective on how to effectively identify and manage the depressed patient in primary care and why this is so important in the treatment of depression and prevention of suicide. Dr Rock presents some of the context and evidence on depression and multi-morbidity in our population. He also introduces the principles of the Alliance Against Depression(AAD) an approach recognised as the world’s best practice for the care of people with depression and in the prevention of suicide. It is a community led and GP-centric model.
Further information on the Alliance Against Depression framework is available at https://phexchange.wapha.org.au/AAD or by contacting the AAD Coordination Centre on 6287 7948
