Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid Training Feedback

The purpose of the Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid Training is to upskill Metro ITC providers to support ITC clients who may be developing or experiencing a mental health illness and/or are in a mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis is resolved.

Research has found the course to be effective and culturally appropriate in empowering Aboriginal people while providing information that is highly relevant to assist Aboriginal people experiencing mental health problems.

Topics covered during the course include:

  • Social and emotional wellbeing
  • Mental health problems in communities
  • How to provide initial help
  • Where and how to get professional help and;
  • How to provide first aid in a crisis situation

Proposed outcomes:

  • Improved capability of Metro ITC Providers to coordinate care for Aboriginal people with a mental health diagnosis,
  • Improved capability of Metro ITC Providers to identify ITC clients with a mental health issue/s,
  • Improved capability of Metro ITC Providers to assist ITC clients in a time of crisis and;
  • Increased knowledge of mental health conditions within the community and the available supports.
