Community of Practice for Consumer Engagement Survey

Project overview

“Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” Wenger-Trayner

The Health Consumers’ Council (HCC) and WA Primary Health Alliance (WAPHA) are interested in supporting a community of practice for health service providers and consumer representatives to share information and lessons learned about consumer engagement. When we talk about consumer engagement we mean: “the way that health services involve people in the planning, delivery, improvement and evaluation of our health services.”[1] When we talk about consumer representatives, we mean anyone who is involved in a working group or committee within the health system – representing either consumer or carer views.

This community of practice could include an online platform for people to share resources and connect with each other, as well as people getting together face to face.

We’re reaching out to staff and consumer representatives who work or are involved in any part of the WA health system. We’d like to know what you think of this idea. We also want your input to make this community as useful as possible.

Thank you to everyone that participated in a workshop last week.

Both the face to face workshop as well as the online forum had an excellent turnout and participants provided valuable feedback on the survey results conducted prior to the workshop, the purpose of a community of practice and the possible features that the community would/could offer.

The information gathered at both workshops will be used by a working group of staff and consumer/carer representatives to inform and shape the community.

The full workshop report is available here.
