COVID-19 Stock Redistribution

What is stock redistribution?

Stock Redistribution is the process by which the vaccine is physically moved and possession is transferred from a vaccinating provider that first received the vaccine shipment, to another vaccinating provider, who will store and/or administer the doses.

Vaccine redistribution is one of many vaccine management tools that providers can use to mitigate vaccine wastage – vaccines available to providers have specific storage conditions, as a result, their redistribution considerations differ.

How do I safely transport the vaccine?

Failure to store, handle and transport vaccines properly can reduce vaccine potency, resulting in inadequate immune responses in clients and poor protection against disease.

Every time vaccine leaves the storage unit the cold chain is at risk, therefore redistributions should be limited to the extent possible.

Vaccine must not be redistributed more than once, pursuant to COVID-19 vaccine manufacturer guidance.

Redistribution Requirements

Sender must ensure validated cold-chain procedures are in place, provide the minimum/maximum vaccine refrigerator temperature chart as per Appendix 5 of ‘Strive for 5’.

Sender must ensure that cold-chain data is available to receivers and ‘Redistribution Contact/Officer’ at the time of the request.

Sending and receiving location must ensure updated inventory counts are reflected in their CVAS reporting.
